Recent research highlights the critical role of norepinephrine oscillations during non-REM #Sleep in driving the brain’s glymphatic system, which clears waste products like amyloid and tau proteins associated with neurodegenerative diseases.
The study also raises concerns about the commonly prescribed sleep aid zolpidem (Ambien), which, while effective in inducing sleep, was found to suppress these norepinephrine oscillations. This suppression disrupts the glymphatic system, potentially hindering the brain’s natural waste-clearing processes and increasing the risk of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.
These findings underscore the importance of natural sleep rhythms in maintaining brain health and suggest that some sleep medications may interfere with essential neurophysiological processes.
